They assist certified millwrights with the installation, maintenance, repair, and dismantling of heavy industrial machinery at construction sites.
Job Summary
The skilled laborer assists in supporting various construction projects, the tradespeople, operating tools and machinery, performing basic construction, and maintaining worksites while adhering to safety standards.
Duties and responsibilities
- Site preparation: Clean and prepare construction sites for the installation or repair of machinery.
- Material handling: Load, unload, and transport heavy machinery, equipment, and materials to and from the work area using dollies, hoists, forklifts, or cranes.
- Rigging: Select appropriate cables, ropes, slings, and chains for moving heavy equipment, and assist with rigging and hoisting procedures.
- Machine assembly and disassembly: Work with a team to dismantle, assemble, and move machinery, such as conveyors, turbines, and structural steel.
- Equipment operation: Operate a variety of hand and power tools, and potentially some light-duty heavy equipment, under supervision.
- Construction support: Construct foundations for machines using materials like wood, cement, and steel.
- Assisting skilled trades: Provide direct assistance to millwrights and other skilled tradespeople, carrying tools, and setting up equipment.
- General maintenance: Perform routine lubrication and other preventive maintenance tasks as instructed.
- Safety and cleanup: Adhere to all safety regulations and company procedures and perform general site cleanup and housekeeping.
Qualifications
- Technical aptitude: Basic mechanical understanding and the ability to operate a wide array of hand and power tools.
- Physical fitness: The work is physically demanding and requires the ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders and scaffolding, and work in tight or elevated spaces.
- Teamwork: The ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with other skilled workers and supervisors is essential.
- Blueprint reading: The ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and schematic drawings is often required to determine proper work procedures.
- Attention to detail: Must be detail-oriented and committed to following safety procedures and technical instructions precisely.
- Construction experience: Previous experience in construction, mechanical, or a related technical field is typically required.
- Welding skills: Experience with welding and fabrication can be a highly desirable qualification for this role.
